Louisville Icy RoadsThe weather in Louisville and surrounding communities has definitely taken a turn for the worse.  It’s what we can expect for January in Kentuckiana.  One of the dangers we face now is icy road conditions.  Did you know PIP insurance covers injuries and damage due to accidents on icy roads, even if yours is the only car involved?

Earlier today, WLKY meteorologist, Matt Melosevich reported that “Of the 32 counties in our viewing area, 25 reported accidents or slide offs due to ice this morning.”

We were lucky to have a fairly mild winter up until now.  That means we’re just beginning to see the effects of the ice and snow.  And, every year we are reminded that we need to change our driving habits when the roads get bad.

Common accidents on icy roads include rear-end collisions, T-bone collisions and yes, even single-car accidents involving guardrails, telephone poles and other objects.

If your injuries and damages exceed $1,000 – and you’re an insured Kentucky driver – Kentucky insurance laws provide that you have $10,000 coverage automatically available to pay for your injuries, lost wages, damage and other expenses.  Remember, this is also available if you’re the only car involved, as long as you have insurance (which is another Kentucky law).  If you were a passenger in someone else’s car, you may also qualify for PIP coverage, even if the driver doesn’t have insurance.

What to Do After Accidents on Icy Roads

If you get into an accident, you should call the police and make sure a report is made. Then, immediately seek medical treatment.  This provides documentation, creates a medical record and can address underlying injuries that may not show up for a few days or weeks.  More snow and ice is on the way.  It’s better to get treatment so you can begin healing before battling more of those winter conditions.  PIP is there to help you pay for that medical treatment and more.

Kentucky PIP laws can be complicated.  Negotiating with your own insurance company can be frustrating. The people on the phone, the insurance adjusters and others who work for your insurance company have one priority in mind – Saving Their Company Money;  Then, paying your bills comes in a distant second.  It’s usually a good idea to seek the help of a qualified, experienced attorney.

Our team at Hessig and Pohl injury attorneys is ready and available to help you.  We’ve dealt with all sorts of collisions, including accidents on icy roads.  While we don’t take every case, we will speak with you and try to make sure you have the information you’ll need.
